Pat Whittle: Exploring Alternatives by Michael Potashnik and Tony Neville February 2024 |
Pat Whittle is a talented artist who has produced some excellent paintings in recent years. These days, however, she is uncertain where to go next and is exploring a variety of processes for future work. Although Pat was involved in art at an early age, she also had a strong interest in nature and science which led her to study for degrees in biology and computer science. While beginning her working life teaching biology, she spent most of it as a software engineer. |
Once her youngest son went off to college, Pat returned to artmaking taking drawing and painting classes at NOVA. Her talent was soon recognized, winning awards in student shows for her drawings and paintings. See "Berry" shown at right. Pat continued her studies locally at The Compass Atelier, The Yellow Barn Studio and online at Black Pond Studio. |
Fine Art Chair, Lis Zadravec, encouraged her to participate in the Waterford Fair art show where Pat again met with success - gaining awards and sales. Pat continues to show locally and has had work juried into regional and national shows. One of her current pieces “Red Sky” (shown left) was juried into the Strathmore Arts show PRISM: Connections in Color and will be on view from Jan 26th through March 2nd at the Strathmore Mansion in Rockville, MD. |
It is not surprising that in view of her background in biology, Pat does a masterful job with flowers, some of which have been produced on Yupo paper with interesting patterns. Left are two examples of her different styles of painting flowers: 'For Ruth' and 'Astilbe'. |
Pat has also produced some wonderful landscapes that are colorful and surrealistic
in character. These invented worlds are among her favorite paintings to produce. (Right - 'And then there were None' and 'Thru the Woods')
|
Exploring realism, she has painted a riveting scene of New York City’s 10th Avenue. While she is not sure she wants to continue to paint with bold colors, Pat has a strong interest in abstract impressionism. |
After joining the LSC in 2019, Pat has also been producing plein air paintings at various paint outs, although she is more inclined to paint in her studio. At this stage of her career, Pat is exploring. She’ll be spending her studio time this year experimenting with different media and techniques. She hopes to recreate some of her painted images in collage and explore relief and monoprint techniques. Her favorite artists include Hockney, Vuillard, Van Gogh, Klimt and the contemporary California abstract artist, Mitchell Johnson. Her desire is to create works that are intriguing and thought-provoking—a laudable objective that will require devoting more time to creating. You can view Pat's current work HERE. |
