Artist Statement:
Kathleen has been painting since the age of 8. Inspired by her high school and college teachers she continued to earn a bachelors’ degree in studio art and then an MFA in painting from American University. An elementary art teacher for over 30 years she retired 7 years ago. Now Kathleen paints in her studio in her home of Lovettsville where she has lived for over 36 years. The scenery of this beautiful area becomes the subject of most of her work. Trees, rocks and reflections are some of her favorite things to paint. While walking and hiking in the area she captures ideas in photos then returns to her studio to compose and bring everyday images to life in strong color, contrast and light. “ the light in my work is everything!” Sketching with brush, she layers colors to create light that glows from the sky and watery reflections. Trees can be found in almost all her work.
