Artist Statement:
Since living in and visiting several Asian countries as a child, Janice has been drawn to Asian art. Once she discovered the pairing of the aesthetic in “ brush painting” with Western watercolor, she was hooked.

Janice has studied under an internationally recognized and award-winning artist as well as under Chinese master Henry Wo Yue-Kee. As with her mentors, Janice's paintings are inspired by nature, and she often paints whatever is in season. Including a bird or oversized insect adds a bit of life and sense of humor.

Trained in traditional methods, Janice typically grinds her own ink on a hand-carved stone, mixes her own colors using Chinese mineral paints, and uses natural fur and hair brushes. Her paintings are on “rice” paper, made of mulberry and other natural fibers.

Janice also enjoys working with soft pastels. The intense colors were what first caught her eye; the magic of working with pure pigments pulled her into a new obsession. Her beloved eastern shore and Loudoun County’s rural scenes provide her with boundless, gorgeous inspiration.

Janice takes much satisfaction entering her studio in beautiful Round Hill and setting to work.
