Artist Statement:
My work explores the visual world through painting. Working representationally, I am drawn to the challenge of conveying the light, atmosphere, and movement that bring a subject to life. To hone these skills I make a practice of plein air painting in much the same way a person might practice meditation.
My work as a copyist at the National Gallery of Art deepens the exploration of skills and techniques. Studying and recreating paintings by master artists allows me to examine their choices of color, value, brushwork, and composition firsthand. Whether I am painting a landscape or a figure, I am interested in the relationships that give an image its vitality. Each painting I attempt presents a new opportunity to learn.
