Tony Neville, Watercolorist, Teacher, Photographer

by Michael Potashnik December 2025

Tony Neville was born and raised in Ireland. He loved painting and the visual arts from an early age.  He won a national art competition at age 12 and later pursued a 5-year Bachelor’s degree (cum laude) at University College, Dublin, and was granted a Fellowship to study in the Technical Institute of Otanieni, Finland. Thereafter, he won a Fullbright scholarship to study at the University of Pennsylvania where he completed his Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture.  During these formative years, he pursued his love of painting but it was only after retirement was he able to return to his painterly roots.

From his earliest years, Tony sketched and painted landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes.  This came easily growing up in Dublin, Ireland and cycling through the Irish countryside and Georgian cities.  He has fond memories of painting his native land, intrigued by the French Impressionists and Braque. Through these experiences, Tony feels fortunate to have gained a rich understanding of architecture and the natural sciences.  These experiences underlie his joy in painting cities and landscapes which is why he joined the Loudoun Sketch Club several years ago.

Tony turned to full-time painting some 12 years ago, and now enjoys placing a personal stamp on the light and color of scenes in the US, Ireland, England, Italy, France, and the Iberian Peninsula.  He has completed numerous commissions for private collections on both sides of the Atlantic.  His local subjects include landmarks along the Potomac river such as Georgetown, the National Cathedral, and the monuments of the National Mall. Further afield, subjects include rural scenes of Loudoun County, coastal Maine, Atlantic beaches, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Tony enjoys teaching and, the interaction with other painters in his classes and workshops. He especially enjoys offering guidance while demonstrating landscape painting. He has taught watercolor painting for over ten years for Arlington Artists Alliance. Artistic recognition has come from being elected to the Potomac Valley Watercolorists (PVW) and receiving an award at an Art League show in  Alexandria, Virginia, as well as acceptance of numerous watercolors for juried shows.  He is now routinely included in shows at the new McLean Art Gallery. We expect to see many fine paintings from Tony in the coming years.
